Why Cursive Writing is Important

I couldn’t tell you how disappointed I was after I learned that cursive writing is not being taught in school anymore.  I remember growing up I had to learn how to write in cursive starting in 1st grade.  Back then it was a requirement to write in cursive throughout elementary school.  Then starting in middle school, the school didn’t really require you to write in cursive.  If you want to continue to write in cursive, I guess you can…but you don’t have to.  That was when my writing style changed from cursive to print, and it continues up until now.

The debate still continues whether it is important for children these days to write in cursive or not.  Time has changed with the increasing usage of technology that drives people to type on computer or their phones versus writing on a piece of paper, writing in cursive has become an ancient history.  The truth is we don’t know whether writing in cursive helps developing motor skills or better for the brain development.  What I do know:

• My mom still writes in cursive, and she’s not computer savvy.  So I would like my children to be able to read birthday cards from their grandparents
• I want my kids to be able to read old historical documents when we visit museums

I guess what I’m saying is I don’t expect my children to write in cursive like I did in my first 6 years of schooling.  I’m just hoping that the school put a little bit of an effort in teaching cursive writing than they do now.
