When my son started Preschool at our current daycare center, I didn’t realize they treat it as ” a real school”. Last Friday, my husband picked him up and brought home an observation report. In it was a detailed observation on my son’s milestone both physical and psychological along with the expectation or things that he needs to work on. I have to say that I was quite impressed by how detail this report is. Things that they cover:
Conduct - Attitudes and Behavior:
- Obedient to school rules
- Works quietly when needed
- Responds to greetings
- Manners
- Interacts with others at free time
- Takes turns, shares with others
- Work independently
Large Motor Development:
- Able to walk on straight line forward
- Able to balance on either foot
- Able to identify body parts
- Able to hop on one/both feet
- Able to march
Small Motor Development (the one he needs more attention on):
- Able to cut on lines
- Able to work puzzles
- Demonstrates proper use of writing utensils
- Can trace over name without help
- Able to trace letters without help
Academic Knowledge
- Knows the days of the week in order
- Knows shapes: circle, square, triangle, oval, rectangle, heart, star, diamond
- Knows colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, black, white
- Able to recognize A - H letters (the rest will be covered in 2nd semester), in capital letters, lower case and its sounds
Paying Attention:
- To classroom activities
- To stories
- Responds when called upon
Using language (daily communication)
- Communicates with others
- Responds when spoken to
- Stays on topic when speaking
My son masters on most categories except on small motor development, obedient to school rules, works independently, and paying attention. I’m not surprised knowing that he has troubles on paying attention, most of the times I have to repeat myself 20 times before he actually does what I want. Additionally, I did receive a few bad behavior report because he’s not following the rules. The teacher also suggested that he colors more at home and practice cutting with safety scissors. These activities will help building his hand and eye coordination.
Overall I’m very happy that he receives this type of assessment because I wouldn’t know all the details about his milestone. It also made me realize that I have to get more involve in his development instead of leaving him completely in the hand of his teachers. At the end of the day, he is my child… not the teacher’s child. Teachers are there just to help us. The rest is still our responsibility.

Congrats on your son’s great report! I really like what you said at the end of your post about teachers being their to help parents, that the rest is still our responsibility. I totally agree with you! I need to take a look at that report more carefully and “evaluate” my own kid!!

Thanks Meagan. It really was a wake up call for me. Now I told my son that if he doesn’t finish his school work, he would have to finish it at home. :)
