Kroger and Shell, Help Customers Saving on Gas

With gas price climbing up close to $4/gallon, I couldn’t be more excited when Kroger invited me along with other Columbus bloggers to learn more about Kroger’s new Fuel Reward Program.  We usually go to Giant Eagle to purchase third party gift cards as needed, and use their fuel perks program to save on gas.  We never tried Kroger’s old fuel program before because, quite honestly, I don’t think it was appealing enough for us to do so.

With the new program, Kroger has teamed up with Shell in allowing consumers to save up to $1.00 per gallon on fuel by using their Kroger Plus Card.  Starting on May 1, customers earn one fuel point for every dollar they spend at local Kroger store when presenting Kroger Plus Card.  Customers instantly save 10 cents for every 100 points they redeem at Kroger Fuel Centers, Turkey Hill Mini Market and participating Shell stations, up to 35 gallons of fuel per purchase.  Fuel Points may be redeemed in 100 point increments.  For example, when you spend $50 on grocery at Kroger, you earn 50 points.  Once your point has reached to 100 points, you earn 10 cents per gallon of fuel.  You can redeem it right away or you can wait until your point reach to 1000 points save $1 per gallon of fuel.  Easy, right?

Additionally, Kroger also offers additional fuel points when customers purchase prescriptions or gift cards.  Customers earn 50 fuel points for each eligible filled prescription and 2 fuel points for every dollar spent on third party gift cards.  Fuel Points are automatically added into your Kroger Plus Card and printed on the receipt after every purchase.  You can check how many points you earn by going to “My Kroger” page at www.kroger.com .  Fuel Points must be used during the month they are earned or by the end of the following calendar month.

To better understand about the program, I’m copying the Q & A from their hand out during the session:

What’s New?
The fuel program now allows you to receive greater discounts INSTANTLY on fuel purchases at Kroger, Turkey Hill and participating Shell locations.  For each increment of 100 Points redeemed at the pump, 10¢ off per gallon is awarded up to $1 off per gallon.
Example:
100 Points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up
200 Points = 20¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up
1,000 Points = $1 off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up

How do I earn fuel points?
• Scan your Plus Card at checkout.
• Earn a point for every dollar you spend at Kroger and Turkey Hill stores.*
• Earn 50 points for every qualifying prescription you fill. (Government funded prescriptions are excluded)
• Earn double points for every dollar you spend on qualifying gift cards (normal exclusions apply).

Do Gift Card purchases count toward fuel points?
Yes, they all count with the exception of Kroger Gift Cards, Green Dot cards, MoneyPaks and 1-2-3 REWARDS® Visa prepaid Debit Card and ReCharge Card™.  All remaining Gift Card purchases count toward your points.

How many fuel points do I need for a fuel discount?
As soon as you earn 100 fuel points, you can save 10¢ a gallon on a fill up.  You can choose to use your points on your next visit to a Kroger Fuel Center, Turkey Hill store or participating Shell location, or you can save your points and build up your discount to save 20¢, 30¢. 40¢… up to $1 a gallon.

Is there a limit to the fuel points I can earn?
No.  There is no limit.  There is a maximum discount of a dollar per gallon ($1.05/gal when paying with a Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS® Credit Card at Kroger Fuel Centers or Turkey Hill stores).  Fuel savings are limited to 35 gallons, per vehicle, per purchase.

Is there a limit to how many fuel points I can redeem at once?
Yes, there is a limit of 1,000 points that can be used in a single fill-up.

How do I keep track of my fuel points?
Your current points balance is located at the bottom of your Kroger receipt.  You can also check your points balance by registering your Kroger loyalty card number at kroger.com

Can I choose not to use my discount at the fuel pump?
Yes, simply don’t initiate the fuel prompt.

How long do I have to use my fuel points?
Points remaining after a fill-up are available to use through the end of the following month in which they were earned, providing you have at least 100 remaining fuel points.  When filling up, you’ll always be offered the biggest discount available, based on each month’s fuel point totals available in your account.  For example, if you have 200 unredeemed fuel points from January and 300 fuel points in February, the 30¢ per gallon discount from February will be offered on your next fill-up.  The 20¢ per gallon discount from January will be available through the end of February.

Shell station fuel pumps don’t have scanning technology.  So either insert your wallet-sized Kroger Plus card or key in your Plus card number on the back of your card or key fob.  You can also enter your alternate ID. Remember, your alternate ID must be registered with Kroger in order for it to work properly.  Go to kroger.com or visit a Kroger customer service desk to update your Plus card information.

Does the 1-2-3 rewards Credit Card still give an additional 5¢ per gallon discount at shell?
Once you have earned 100 points, you can save an extra 5¢ per gallon when you pay at the pump using your Kroger 1-2-3 REWARDS® Credit Card at Kroger Fuel Centers & Turkey Hill stores.  At Shell, redeem your fuel discount with your 1-2-3 REWARDS® Credit Card by entering the loyalty card number on the back of your card.  The extra 5¢ per gallon does not apply at Shell.
