Last Thursday I had the opportunity to go to a happy hour with people from work, thanks to my friend/neighbor who watched my kids for a couple hours. I don’t normally get to go to a happy hour a lot with my co-workers because it’s usually on Thursday night at some bars close to work. This time I got to go because the bar they picked was very close to my house. So I went home, picked up my kids, fed them and drop them off at my friend’s house. These group of people happen to be people from my department but outside my group. In other words, I don’t normally interact with them on a daily basis. Within those two hours, I had a wonderful time. I laughed…made a joke…laugh again…and I wasn’t even drunk! I had one beer and drank it for the entire two hours I was there! One of my friends said to me, “Wow!! Outside of work you are so much fun!”
Then I saw her walking to my boss’ boss. They both were looking at me and giggling, so I knew they were talking about me. So I came straight to them and said, “What are you guys talking about?”
She said, “No, I was just telling him that “Outside of Work you” are really funny!”
I said with a smile, “Well…thanks! I guess I’m really boring at work”
They both said “No, it’s a good thing. We all are so busy with our work and you sit so far away from all of us, we don’t get to see the real you”
The next day everybody said “She was a hoot!!”
So I guess in a weird way I’m a little flattered, because I just realized… I used to be fun! And I still have it! It’s all just buried beneath all the seriousness in life that I have to face daily.
- Kids…love them to death but they do give me gray hair and turn me into a cranky old woman
- It’s so easy to get drawn into your work because there are so much to do and so little time. However it’s also important to take it easy and network with people outside your comfort zone. Sometimes when you hang out too much with the same people all the time, you become them and you lose your personality
Gosh, I need to go out more!!!
